The medal is 18mm in diameter, with a fern leaf motif on the suspender both on the obverse and the reverse. This medal was the first distinctively ‘New Zealand’ war service medal, which was emphasised by the use of the fern leaf motif on the suspender and the national colours of black and white in the ribbon.
Obverse
the obverse of this medal is the uncrowned effigy of King George VI with the inscription GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR: OMN: REX F : D : IND : IMP.
Reverse
The reverse of the medal is inscribed “FOR SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND 1939-1945” and has a silver fern at the bottom edge of the medal.
Ribbon
The ribbon is 16mm wide, and consists of a black watered centre (11mm), with two thin white watered stripes on either side (2.5mm).
